One of my favorite movies is Working Girl. It’s one of those films I can watch again and again. Working Girl is a snapshot of the ‘80s, when women wore power suits and fought for their place at the corporate table. In many ways, Working Girl is as relevant today as it was in the 80s. While women are still working for a place at the table, there is one big difference: Women are helping one another create their own tables.

BY HAVING THE COURAGE TO DREAM BIG, AND ASK FOR WHAT YOU WANT, YOU’VE ALREADY ELIMINATED MOST OF YOUR COMPETITION.

On two different days this week, I found a big, praying mantis in my Texas kitchen. The first one was perched on the coffee maker; the second was on the toaster. With each discovery, I scooped it up, took it outside and placed it in a bush. They were not afraid of me, and because in the fourth grade, I had a praying mantis, I was not afraid of them.

My praying mantis lived in my fourth grade classroom, in a large aquarium with a vented lid. One morning we all arrived to find hundreds of baby praying mantis crawling along the walls, the student lockers and across the desks. My praying mantis had been pregnant. It was her babies that had invaded the school, and by the shrieks coming from the teacher’s lounge, they’d made their way there as well.

THE MANTIS NEVER MAKES A MOVE UNLESS IT’S CERTAIN IT’S THE RIGHT THING TO DO. IN THAT MOMENT, I REALIZED THAT WITH MY BUSY WORK SCHEDULE, I’D ABANDONED MY MEDITATION PRACTICE.

Here are five things, that won’t cost you any money, but may change how you view yourself.

“IF YOU DON’T THINK YOU CAN, YOU WON’T.”

Depression and drinking can go hand in hand. Women often self-medicate by telling themselves that work, depression and problems sleeping are benign reasons why they “drink to relax.” Truth is, their drinking may be making their problems worse. While alcohol delivers an initial high and temporarily lifts the weight of their problems, the depressant effects of alcohol will also bring them down.

Whether it’s cabernet or cocktails, women are drinking more than ever, and not just socially.

If you watched this year’s Emmy’s you may have seen Sofia Vergara, standing on a rotating circular pedestal while the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences president gave his usual blah, blah, blah speech. For the audience, Vergara’s infamous curves were an entertaining distraction to an otherwise boring part of the show. Afterward, women’s groups and online sites like Salon and Jezebel criticized the bit as “super sexist” and “pathetic.” Seriously ladies? Me thinks thou hast taken political correctness too far! If you want to talk about the unwilling sexism women encounter in the workplace, the board room, or raising startup capital, then step aside, because I can go on until you tell me to stuff a sock in it.

“WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? MAKE IT VA-VA-VOOMIER! MORE IS MORE! EVERY WOMAN… EVERY BODY… WORK WHAT YOU’VE GOT!”
