While my biggest problem is thinning hair, as in I have open runways big enough to land a passenger jet on, our hair color can make us look washed out as we get…. as time goes by.

I will never go gray. That’s just not me. I may be 105 and stepping on boobs that drag the floor, but I won’t go gray. There are women I know, like the fabulous Lauren Ezersky—remember her long running cable show, “Behind the Velvet Ropes”—who are prematurely gray and oh, so chic, but I’m not one of them.

“I HAD TO FIGHT THE URGE TO STOP HER, AND INSTEAD, REMINDED MYSELF, “SHE IS RITA HAZAN.”

This year, 2015, marks Lancôme’s 80th anniversary. What began in 1935, as a French fragrance house, is now one of the world’s luxury skincare companies. Because Lancôme wants 1010ParkPlace readers to play up our assets and put our best selves forward, Lancôme is giving one lucky 1010ParkPlace reader a gift box full of Lancôme makeup and beauty products valued at over $500.

Lancôme has asked Sandy Linter, legendary makeup artist and Lancôme’s Ambassador at Every Age, to choose her Top 10 Favorite Lancôme products and why she likes them for women over 40.

“MAKEUP GOES A LONG WAY TOWARD HELPING YOU LOOK YOUR BEST,” SAID SANDY. “I LOVE TEACHING WOMEN THE RIGHT STEPS. BRUSHES ARE GREAT TOOLS. THEY’RE ALMOST AS IMPORTANT AS THE MAKEUP ITSELF, SO I’VE INCLUDED A BRUSH IN MY LIST.”

One of my mother’s favorite things to say is, “You have no idea what it’s like to get older.” I’m always amazed at how she says this with a straight face, ignoring that she gave birth to me when Howdy Doody was at the peak of his career.

“Wait until you go into a room and can’t remember why you went there in the first place,” she continues, “and you start losing your hair.”

“BEEN THERE DONE THAT,” I WANT TO SAY. “SIDE EFFECTS OF CHEMOTHERAPY.”

My hands look like those of a 200-hundred-year-old gargoyle that’s been clinging to the side of Notre Dame: They’re gnarled and weathered. I’ve never used hand lotion or taken care of my hands. Just the opposite. In my 20s, when I worked in the darkroom, I used my fingers, instead of tongs, to transfer photos from one caustic chemical bath to another. If that wasn’t bad enough, I never wore hand lotion. if you’ve ever repositioned a contact lens with your finger, then you know hand lotion can leave a fingerprint. “Out of focus” and “photographer” don’t go together. So now, years of no lotion and running out of estrogen has resulted in old lady hands.

BUT HALLELUJAH AND PASS THE HAND CREAM! I’VE DISCOVERED SOMETHING WONDERFUL.

I remember the exact moment Gayle’s mother caught me ironing her hair. Gayle was bent at an awkward angle; her head, sideways on the ironing board; her arms hanging down toward the floor. It must have looked like something out of a bad “B” movie where some twisted creep is torturing a helpless teenage girl.

With the battle cry of mothers everywhere, Gayle’s mom screamed, “What are you doing!” It was more of an hysterical declaration than a question, but for me and Gayle, it was just another bad hair day. Nothing we hadn’t done before.

WHILE MANY WOMEN ARE CLUTCHING THEIR BOTTLE OF HAIR COLOR LIKE THEY’RE HANGING ON TO A LIFEBOAT FROM THE TITANIC, OTHERS ARE CHOOSING TO GO GRAY.

I never thought I’d see the day when cosmetic companies featured women over 40, who weren’t photoshopped, but 69-year-old Dame Helen Mirren is the new UK ambassador for L’Oreal, and she’s beautiful! Thank you, L’Oreal. Helen Mirren is not only someone women over 40 can identify with, but all women can hope they’ll look half as good when they’re her age. Mirren marks L’Oreal’s new approach to celebrating age, rather than pushing “anti-aging.”

WE ARE LOYAL VALUED CUSTOMERS WHO’VE SURVIVED SEX, DRUGS AND ROCK ‘N’ ROLL; IN VITRO FERTILIZATION; THE GLASS CEILING; REINVENTION; DIVORCE, DEATH, CHEATING HUSBANDS AND BREAST CANCER.

I’ve been seeing a lot of references about a beauty secret, of the stars, called Dermaplaning. A recent Yahoo article said, “The treatment consists of scraping a tiny scalpel around the face to remove the vellus hairs, otherwise known as peach fuzz, which in turns acts as an exfoliant for dead skin cells… The procedure lasts a pain-free 25 minutes and costs between $85 and $150 per session.”

Hello! That’s called shaving! Men do it, everyday, but if you pay anyone that much to shave your face… Darlin’ you’ve got more money and time than you know what to do with.

The other day a girlfriend and I were texting about things that make women beautiful in their own special way. While some women are not classically beautiful, they have an infectious laugh or a special something that makes them more attractive than what society considers a “pretty woman.”

We then started wondering how many of us have faces that are symmetrical: where both sides are mirror images of one another? Have you ever covered one side of your face, and then the other, and noted the differences, and wondered what you’d look like if both sides were identical? Regardless of which side we choose as our dominant mirror image, for most of us, the results will be two different people. Continue Reading

We all know women who looked better before they started getting Botox, fillers and plastic surgery. If I wasn’t afraid of becoming one of those women, I would signup for a “neck job” in a heartbeat. While it’s tempting to believe television commercials that claim minimal invasive procedures can transform you into the beautiful butterfly you once were, you might want to think twice before having one of those surgeries.

Ten years ago I met a well-known soap opera star through a mutual friend. I knew she’d had a facelift, but her results were fabulous! I don’t mean it was one of those facelifts where you say, “She’s had work done, but ‘it’s’ ok.” You couldn’t tell she’d had anything done except she looked better than ever. Fresh and relaxed. In a blink I became the woman at the table next to Meg Ryan’s character, in When Harry Met Sally; the one who tells the waiter, “I’ll have whatever she’s having.” I promptly got the name of the soap star’s surgeon and beat a path to his Beverly Hills door.

ABOVE ALL, I DON’T WANT TO LIVE WITH PLASTIC SURGERY THAT MAKES ME LOOK LIKE A DESPERATE VERSION OF MYSELF.

While youthful legs have a natural sheen to them, I don’t know about you, but “maintenance” is more difficult for me than it used to be. I work hard at keeping my legs toned, but no matter what I do, little half moons have developed above my knees. Little half moons… Who am I kidding? They’re wrinkles caused by gravity. The trainers at my gym call them teardrops, which is apropos since they make me want to cry in frustration. Instead of giving in, I’ve embarked on a routine to make my legs the best they can be. Here are five tips to great looking legs.

LEGS THAT AREN’T MAINTAINED ARE DEAD GIVEAWAYS TO A WOMAN’S AGE.
