This trip to Nashville was amazing in more ways than I could have imagined. A visit to the store, Two Old Hippies, was a revelation. Their elegant, super-groovy, rock ‘n’roll chic was the style I wanted to achieve for my life-on-the-road.

I work from “home” now, yet don’t want to dress the part. Still, I want all of my clothes to be comfortable since I sit for hours driving or writing. They mustn’t become wrinkled-to-death or baggy, and I want to look stylish, both for myself, and for when we stop and grab a quick bite to eat, or I run to Starbuck’s for wi-fi.

Denim is the mainstay of my closet. Rather than feel like I should apologize or continue trying to upgrade my lifelong preference, I’ve decided to focus everything around it. I’ll make it all play well, together, whether I’m dressing it up or down, for both cold weather and hot. Think Garanimals for grown-ups!

If you’ve traveled, you’ve seen how most people accommodate ONLY their desire for comfort. Pajamas… really? And there’s the always recognizable American Touristy Wardrobe: sweatsuits, UGLY white sneakers, or Crocs. Oh, my!

For comfort I love the dark stretch denims available now. The cropped length looks great with flats and is perfect for tall boots. On this last trip the temperatures ranged from 90 to 34 degrees. Our dining choices were hotel restaurants to outdoor BBQ joints, and… We walked all over the place. That’s asking for a lot of versatility from a small wardrobe.

Now, for what feels like the very first time, I’m developing a style I feel is my own. I’m simplifying my colors to denim-blues, plus black, grey, and white; adding and updating pieces with simple–yet sexy–accents like a ribbon-tie on the back of a sweater. By throwing in my much-loved leather pieces, accenting it all with some leopard print and berry-red lipstick to compliment my newly grown-out silver hair, I’m gonna feel like the hottest woman on 10 wheels!

  1. Donna, you sound like my style guru! I’ve adopted the same dress code for working at home and running around with kids. I find the dark denim works with any dressed up or down look too. Sounds like Happy (fabulously dressed) Trails! Let’s see your new silver hair!
