Here’s the perfect Christmas Holiday gift for you and your girlfriends: Lois Joy Johnson, award-winning journalist and founding editor of MORE magazine, has an insightful new book for women over 50: The Woman’s Wakeup, How to Shake Up Your Looks, Life and Love After 50. The book is an inspirational guide on everything from dating, to reviving your wardrobe; making friends in a new town; changing jobs, plus interviews with top medical professionals. The best part of Lois’s book are the in-depth interviews with women who’ve been there, done that and are still on the road to adventure!

Would you believe I’m featured on the first page of Chapter One: “Stay Foxy, Seasoned and Wise?”

I’m honored to be in the company of ten great women, including the creator of shapewear; the Publisher of MORE magazine; the Strategic Director of Hearst Media; a model you’ll recognize from countless television commercials, who’s also a Chinese medicine practitioner; the longtime Editor-in-Chief of Redbook, Ladies’ Home Journal, Founder of MORE and now VP and Editorial Director of AARP and the former anchor of The Early Show on CBS.

We all had a blast being photographed in our own clothes. Having worked for every magazine, with every supermodel, fashion designer, photographer and on exotic locations around the world, Lois Joy Johnson is the ultimate stylist. Lois has the ability to turn any garment into something special. A couple of years ago Lois dropped by my hotel room dressed in a trapper’s hat, jeans and boots. She was the chicest woman I’d seen all week, and that’s saying a lot for NYC!

With the Rolling Stones blasting from the studio speakers, Michael Waring—who photographed Lois’s other two books, Makeup Wakeup, with iconic makeup artist, Sandy Linter, and Wardrobe Wakeup—has a way of putting you at ease… As if I needed any help! LOL! Wait till you see the photo of me in the last chapter. Yes, my body really bends that way, and no, my hand is not deformed.

Regardless of your age, size or where you are in life, you’re guaranteed to see yourself in The Woman’s Wakeup. You’ll learn new things you’ve never considered and discover ways to increase your self-esteem. Did you know…

  • Age is appropriate and awesome!
  • Forget what magazines say. We will always need these 5 things.
  • Yearly mole and full-body skin cancer checks are not negotiable.
  • Market your age as a bonus.
  • Be Google-able.
  • The point of dating and meeting new people is to rethink your life, routine, looks and relationships for the woman you are now.
  • Who says we can’t be sexy without having sex?
  • Whatever your size now is the real you. Enjoy it and stop looking over your shoulder.
  • We buy and wear what we love. Whenever. Period.
  • Keep taking risks.
  • 10 things you’re finally ready for.

In an oversized paperback format, with 280 pages of beautiful, color photos, The Woman’s Wakeup is a practical coffee table book that’s hard to put down. While it doesn’t come on the market until December 22, 2015, you can pre-order copies on Amazon now and have it shipped in time for Christmas!

As Lois likes to say, “Women 50+ rule the world!”

We feature interviews with inspiring women along with straight-talk and bold conversations to reawaken your passions and make life count.

  1. You never cease to amaze me. Of course you’re a part of this. I am neither shocked or surprised. Thank you for this post. I really needed it! Happy December dear friend. I hope i get to SEE you in 2016. Lots of love and hugs…

  2. This looks like such a wonderful book. Congrats. I’ve long been an admirer of the work Lois has done.

  3. I am definitely getting this for ME, and maybe for a couple of lucky friends. You are gorgeous, inside and out.

  4. Yes, Brenda, I can TOTALLY believe you’re on the first page! Gorgeous, brilliant, sassy you! Lois’s other two books are my fashion/beauty bibles, so I’ve already pre-ordered this one. Thanks for the great gift idea…I’ve got a friend who has gone through Stage IV Inflammatory Breast Cancer and she could use a little positivity.

    • Val,
Don’t you love Lois? The first time I met her was in a mall in Plano, Texas, and we sat on a bench and talked like we’d been friends forever. Sending up a prayer for your friend. Love to you, Brenda

      • She’s doing really well. It’s been almost 4 years since her diagnosis, but she still lives with fear. Plus, she’s going through the “aging parents” issues and it hasn’t been easy. Thanks, Brenda, for always showing compassion!

  5. I’ve still got a way to go to 50 but there’s no way I’m going to wait until I’m there to buy this book! 🙂 That’s an absolutely gorgeous photo of you Brenda and I’m so inspired – but not at all surprised – that you’ve been included in this publication! I can’t wait to get my hands on it! Essie xx

  6. From Australia,Hi Brenda,I have read the book and enjoyed it.I myself have just completed putting together a Coffee Table Photo Book, title WOMEN AGEING BEAUTIFULLY. Forty women with ages ranging from mid fifty to ninety plus were photographed,it was a lot of fun and a lot of hard work however as we age ( i am mid seventies) it is worthwhile taking on new projects as you never know what you are capable of until you try.I have been suprized and delighted with the result and I firmly believe if you put your trust in the universe and just go for it like me you may suprize yourself.
