For the first time in months I’m warm without triple-layers, mittens, and shearling boots. I’m barefoot. My legs are freshly shaved. I’ve met our zany neighbors… I’m one happy camper!

We are in Bisbee, Arizona, a place we knew nothing about two weeks ago. The drive here from Santa Fe led us south to the U.S./Mexico border, through miles of beautiful desert, an oasis in the San Bernardino Valley and back up into the mountains.

A wrong turn led us on a harrowing ride up a narrow street, through the middle of a downtown that resembles a tiny European village. We made it safely up the steep hill to our cliffside perch, overlooking a massive copper mine. The Queen Mine is on one side and the town on the other, and today I feel like a Queen!

I stripped the bed, opened a few windows and our front door to let the sun shine in. I have chosen to put aside the worries that have doggedly followed me and to savor the cloudless azure sky, the coppery hills and the castle bells that chime every hour.

People tend to think this RV lifestyle is worry-free, but no. Life, with all its fears, doubts, family issues, and health challenges all tag along, too. It’s a wonder they can find a nook or cranny to stowaway in.

Do you remember the WWJD campaign (What Would Jesus Do) years ago? I have my own version… I carry a framed photo of my dear, longtime therapist, Linda. She’s relaxing in Mexico, not a care in the world… sipping fine tequila and savoring a Short Story cigar. I know, because I took the photo when I was there on a bridal photo shoot. Every time I feel really stuck, I ask myself WWLD. What would Linda do?

With that question asked, and answered, I head outside to sit in my lawn chair, put my feet up for a while and bask in the warm sun like a Queen surveying her kingdom. Later we’ll walk downtown for some exploration and some lunch. I am choosing to Be Here Now and enjoy exactly where I am, today!

XO Donna

  1. Brilliant, “WWLD” made me laugh out loud! I think I need a Linda in my life too. Whilst I may be preparing to pack my pannier bags and cycle east, I can’t help but remember the words of Confucius, “No matter where you go, there you are”. Esther xx

  2. I know exactly where you are!! Spent an afternoon in that little town when I was in my 20’s. Love that you’re seeing the country this way and am enjoying your posts. Not surprising to know we take our concerns and problems with us. As Essie said… Confucius. “…. there you are.” If it makes you feel any better, it’s wicked cold in Austin! xoxox, Brenda
