When you think about fashion and the 80s, Madonna comes to mind. Madonna Louise Veronica Ciccone, from Bay City, Michigan, was the fashion role model for millions of high school girls. Whether it was her curly, dirty blonde hair, or her “Desperately Seeking Susan” black tank top and skirt, worn over tight, short pants, Madonna was at the forefront of layered necklaces and bracelets, often mixing multiple strands of pearls with a cross. What’s nude and smooth and hot for summer? Pantyhose! Pantyhose are back in a big way. So big, they’re considered to be a major trend. Even celebrities like Katy Perry, Ariana Grande, Beyonce and Jennifer Lopez are wearing them. I don’t know about you, but I’m a happy girl. Other than youth, nothing makes your legs look better than pantyhose. As one fashionable girlfriend of mine said, “Pantyhose take the age off your legs. They’re concealer for the legs.”

REGARDLESS OF HOW HARD YOU WORKOUT, OR WHETHER YOU USE SELF-TANNER, UNLESS YOU’RE YOUNG, THIN AND VERY FIT, MOST OF US ARE KIDDING OURSELVES IF WE THINK OUR LEGS ARE “ALL THAT” WITHOUT PANTYHOSE.

This week 100 women came to Neiman Marcus La Cantera, in San Antonio, to be inspired by Ken Downing, Fashion Director and Senior Vice President for Neiman Marcus, and to see Neiman’s 2015 Spring and Resort fashions. Anyone who follows fashion is familiar with Ken Downing. He’s not only the face of Neiman Marcus, but the definitive tastemaker, stylist and fashion arbiter for anyone interested in clothes and great style. If he’s not on an airplane, meeting with designers, or sitting alongside Anna Wintour at Fashion Week in New York, London, Paris and Milan, Ken is collecting 20th Century contemporary furnishings and art.

“DON’T GO SHOPPING WITH YOUR GIRLFRIENDS, BECAUSE THEY’RE GOING TO TELL YOU THE OPPOSITE OF WHAT YOU WANT TO HEAR.”

All Neiman Marcus Locations

Since 1994, every spring and fall, Neiman Marcus has asked the world’s best photographers—like the great Richard Avedon—to showcase Neiman’s “The Art of Fashion.” This spring, photographers Luigi & Iango, with model Stella Tennant as their muse, have created their vision of 24 beautiful and unforgettable iconic brands.

I WOULD WEAR THAT IN A HEARTBEAT… PROVIDED I HAD SOMEPLACE TO WEAR IT.

When I think about pairing something inexpensive, together with something that makes me gulp when I hand the salesclerk my credit card, I think of Sharon Stone. On more than one occasion Stone has walked the red carpet wearing something that’s changed the way we think about putting an outfit together.

SHE COULD HAVE BORROWED THE JEWELRY OF HER DREAMS AND THE BODYGUARDS TO GO WITH THEM.

One of the best New Year’s resolutions you’ll ever make is to CLEAN OUT YOUR CLOSET!

How many times do we stand in-front of our closet and say, “I have nothing to wear,” when in fact, we have lots of clothes? Most of our closets are so unorganized and crammed full of clothes that we overlook great things. How can we curate our closets with an eye towards building a better wardrobe?

ONE OF THE BEST THINGS I’VE LEARNED IN THE PAST YEAR IS THE WAY I WAS DRESSING IS NO LONGER APPROPRIATE FOR MY CURRENT LIFESTYLE.

When was the last time you cleaned out your closet? The rule of thumb is that if you haven’t worn it in a year, you’re probably not going to wear it in the future, so toss it. Seriously? That’s not the only criteria for keeping clothes. Clothes are part of our history. For most of my adult life, in addition to what was “in” my closet, my closet, itself, was a memorable part of my history.

When I lived in the infamous “Nazi spy house on the hill,” my closets and my dressing rooms were like something out of a 1930’s Hollywood film noir. The only thing missing was Lana Turner in a silk dressing gown.

EACH DRESSING ROOM HAD A SECRET, BUILT-IN, FIREPROOF WALL SAFE.

It never ceases to amaze me what women will do to wear beautiful shoes. We buy shoes in the wrong size because we “have to have them.” We have our feet injected with Botox and fillers and have our toes shortened or lengthened. Why do we do this to ourselves? While wearing beautiful shoes would be nice, I just want shoes that don’t make it painful for me to walk from here to the elevator and feet that are easy to fit.

When I tell a salesperson I wear a nine narrow, as in a 6A narrow width, they shake their head and bring me a medium. One salesman reacted to my narrow feet as though I belonged in a circus sideshow next to the bearded lady. With all due respect, as far as odd feet, I think the Chinese got there first.
